Historic Regata of the Ancient Maritime Republics - Amalfi

The 43rd edition of the Historic Regata of the Ancient Maritime Republics: a celebration of history, people and the sea will be held in Amalfi in June 2008 after the traditional 3-year pause.

The event emphasizes Amalfi's importance as a Maritime Republic and its significance in Mediterranean sea trade. A series of events are scheduled for the Regata, culminating on the last day with a thrilling Historic procession of more than three hundred participants dressed in period costume from the four maritime republics, Amalfi, Genoa, Pisa and Venice and the famous ?Regata of the eight-oar Galleons".

The event will be held in Amalfi from June 1 - 8, 2008 with the attempt to recreate the feats of the Maritime Republics. The race and historical reenactment hare held every year, alternating between the Maritime Republics. The last edition was held in Venice.

The 2008 edition is set is the alluring location of Amalfi. The rival galleons are true replicas of their predecessors, actually used in the Maritime Republic era in the twelfth century. The galleons are steered by a helmsman and driven by the arms of eight oarsmen. These magnificent crafts weight about 760 kilograms each and are approximately 11 meters long. Amalfi's blue coloring, winged horse and mermaid sets its craft apart from the rest. Each craft is painted in the traditional colors of the different Maritime cities and fly their ancient flags.

The race starts in Capo di Vettica, crossing 2,000 meters to finish in Amalfi.
